Meditations on Breguet and Mathematics
2016, 39 pages, ill
Signature of Breguet from a 1774 letter.
This is a supplement to "The Origins of Self-Winding Watches".
After a discussion on planetary gears, I examine Breguet's stop-work, using trigonometry to analyse his designs. Included are remarks on how his stop-work can be made, and whether Breguet's knowledge of mathematics was used by him in designing watches.
The discussions of the behaviour of his stop-work (based on animations) and how it might be made do not use mathematics.
