Practical Watchmaking

By Vigniaux

1788 and 1802, 176 pages, ill

First published in 1788, this book gives a detailed description of how to make a verge watch movement.

The second edition of 1802 (provided here in translation) added an explanation of continental quarter repeaters and their faults.

This is my third translation on the topic of verge watch making. The previous two are available in the book Berthoud and Auch "How to Make a Verge Watch". All three authors treat the subject differently and Vigniaux's book complements that previously published.

The book (about 13 MB) is provided as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file. (there is one colour illustration, but it can be printed in black and white):

Illustration: Charles LeRoy, Paris, verge watch circa 1780.
